Dr. David Russell BSc Hons Physics, PhD Pure Physics, MBChB Hons Personal Profile After spending 15 years in physics I retrained in medicine in 2001. I am now working in Scotland and preparing for a career in translational science. My research specialites are Laser Spectroscopy (Both High Temporal and Spectral Resolution) Mathematical modeliing and computer simulation Instrumentation Skills Profile Problem Solving/Technical • Have worked on research projects with a multidisciplinary character such as the response of algae to laser light and non-linear spectroscopy of biological systems. Fundamentally the interpretation of biological phenomena through the application of mathematics and physics techniques. • Advanced instrumentation skills through construction of state of the art spectroscopic experiments. • During my PhD research I created mathematical models to represent the behaviour of complex physical systems which were non-linear and statistical in nature. The models were solved analytically or through computer simulations (devised by myself) and their validity tested through comparison with empirical data. The completed models were used to determine the underlying physical properties and predict future behaviour of the systems. • Developed strong analytic and diagnostic skills during physics degree. Modular structure of course allowed me to have an emphasis in mathematics as well as physics. Computing • Experienced at programming in Fortran, C/C++, Perl, Basic and Labview. Have written software to control, collect and model experimental data. • Have gained in depth knowledge of mathematical analysis packages such as Maple, Mathematica and SPSS in practice. • Detailed knowledge of Windows and UNIX operating systems. • Good knowledge of computer hardware. Projects • Algal holography, Nuffield Research Award, 1992 Undergraduate Design and construction of optical experiments to investigate the nature of phototaxis in algae. • Fundamental Studies of Laser Gain Media, 1993-96 PhD OMRCHigh spectral resolution spectroscopy and theoretical modelling of laser gain media. This included computer simulation and instrumentation. • Laser Retinography, 1995 Consultancy OMRC Optical characterisation of sensitising dye used in laser treatment for macular degeneration. • Molecular Dynamics of Conjugated Polymers, 1997-2000 PDRA Imperial College Time and frequency domain spectroscopic analysis of conducting polymers. • Multi-dimensional spectroscopy of protein systems 2000-2003, PDRA Imperial College Ultra fast pump-probe IR spectroscopy of protein systems to fingerprint biological molecules and investigate the structure/function relationship. • CROCS Calculated Risk Of Caesarean Section, 2007-Present Online tool for estimating the risk of emergency C-section for prospective mothers. Mathematical analysis of over 60,000 delivery episodes utilising the LWH database.
