Dr Mariann Hardey is newly appointed to the Marketing Group at Durham Business School and is also Associate Director of the Centre for Communication Science. She is a social media professional and academic and the BBC North East commentator for social media and digital networks. She read literature at the University of Sussex and later undertook a research MA followed by a PhD at the University of York. In her work Mariann seeks to identify and understand how real social relationships are mediated through digital social networks and Web 2.0 applications. Mariann is, therefore, a member of a new generation of academics and researchers who have not only grown up digital with technology, but are pushing new research boundaries and thinking futures through them. Mariann Hardey is an Organising Committee member for Making Sense of Microposts (#MSM2011) and invited speaker to the Extended Semantic Web Conference May 2011. Mariann will be presenting at this year's Thinking Digital Conference at the Thinking Digital University - participating in a Social Media Masterclass panel with particular emphasis on the Facebook phenomenon. In February 2011 Mariann presented the premiere of her Facebook Noir - Facebook, the Fear of Losing Attention at the first O'Reilly Media Ignite with Codeworks in Newcastle.>
