About

I study the microbial ecology of the snow and ice environment, including mountain glaciers and polar regions. My research focuses on the communities in cryoconite material on the glacier surface, and past communities in previous surface layers present in ice-cores. Most of my work is based on the computational analysis of microbial sequences obtained through high-throughput and Sanger sequencing methods, and my major interest is in metagenomic and phylogenomic analysis of the snow and ice environment. I grew up in the Okavango region of Botswana, and my initial research was in population ecology of large mammals and GIS analytical techniques. I am currently earning my PhD as a Monbukagakusho Student in the Hongoh Lab of the Tokyo Institute of Technology, with Shiro Kohshima as my advisor on glacial biology and Yuichi Hongoh as my advisor on microbiology.
