Elio Mattia was born in Bari (Italy) in 1986. After having obtained his high school diploma in 2005 in the field of Computer Science, he moved to Pavia (Italy) to start his studies in Chemistry, field with which he had the possibility to become acquainted thanks to the preparation for the International Chemistry Olympiad competitions (bronze medal, IChO 2005, Taipei, Taiwan). He obtained his B.S. degree in 2008 with a thesis in a branch of Chemistry that triggered his curiosity ("Symmetry breaking in chemical systems and the effects of parity violation", with Prof. Antonio Faucitano and Dr. Daniele Dondi of the University of Pavia) and his M.S. degree in 2010 with main specialization in Organic Chemistry (experimental thesis entitled "The Meyer-Schuster reaction in synthetic multi-step processes", with Prof. Giovanni Vidari of the University of Pavia) and Physical Chemistry. He is alumnus of the Institute of Advanced Studies (IUSS) of Pavia (Italy), from which he obtained his Diploma in 2010 with a thesis in Bioinformatics ("Protein Structure Comparison and Motif Retrieval by the Generalized Hough Transform", with Prof. Virginio Cantoni of the University of Pavia). He moved in 2010 to Groningen (The Netherlands) to pursue his Ph.D. in the group of Sijbren Otto motivated by his interests in dissipative systems, dynamic combinatorial chemistry, systems chemistry and the origin of life. He is now working on self-replication arising from dynamically-exchanging chemical systems.
