Dr Emilio Martínez Pañeda is an Assistant Professor (UK Lecturer) and 1851 Research Fellow at Imperial College London. He is the head of the Mechanics of Infrastructure Materials Lab. Born in Oviedo (Spain) in 1987, Martínez Pañeda earned a 5 year BEng. & MEng. degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Oviedo in 2011 and an MSc degree in Structural Engineering from the University of Granada in October 2012. During his MSc studies, Martínez Pañeda conducted research in the mechanics of functionally graded materials under the supervision of Prof. Rafael Gallego. Immediately after graduation, he started working at the University of Oviedo as a Research Assistant under the supervision of Prof. Covadonga Betegón. In the year 2013 he started his PhD studies and was awarded a predoctoral fellowship by the University of Oviedo (ranked 2nd in Engineering). During his PhD, Martínez Pañeda conducted research in the fields of mechanics of materials and computational solid mechanics, with particular emphasis on the modeling of size effects in metal plasticity and fracture and damage assessment. In June 2016 he successfully defended his PhD thesis achieving the highest mark (Summa Cum Laude) and was selected in the competitive H.C. Ørsted program (success rate below 8%). In July 2016 Martínez Pañeda started working as a postdoctoral fellow at the Technical University of Denmark under the supervision of Prof. Christian Niordson. Martínez Pañeda moved in September 2017 to the University of Cambridge, where he worked for two years with Profs. Norman Fleck and Vikram Deshpande. Two years later he moved to Imperial College London as a faculty member. Martínez Pañeda has held visiting scholar positions at several Universities such as the Technical University of Denmark (host: C. Niordson), the University of Luxembourg (host: S. Bordas), the University of California Santa Barbara (host: R. McMeeking) or the University of Cambridge (host: N. Fleck) and he is actively involved in many international collaborations. He is currently a member of the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS), the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) and the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM). He has delivered numerous invited talks and seminars at various international conferences and research institutions. He is author or co-author of numerous scientific publications in international refereed journals in the field of solid mechanics. His contributions have been recognized through several awards.
