About

Erik van der Burg was born in Amsterdam on October 6th, 1974. In 1991, and 1995 he finished the junior secondary technical education (LTS), and senior secondary technical education (MTS), respectively. After that period, he became a technical engineer in 1998. One year later, he started studying artificial intelligence at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. After he finished his Bachelor degree, he started with his master’s in Cognitive Science. As part of this, he went to Potchefstroom, South-Africa for a half year, to follow relevant courses at the North-west University. In 2004, he completed his master’s, and became a research assistant for Prof. Jan Theeuwes (Vrije Universiteit). In November 2005 he started working on a Ph.D. project at the Vrije Universiteit, under supervision of Dr. Chris Olivers, Prof. Jan Theeuwes and Prof. Adelbert Bronkhorst. During his Ph.D. project, Erik went to Australia for a half a year to do research in collaboration with Prof. David Alais and Dr. John Cass at the University of Sydney, Australia. The Ph.D. project (finished in 2009; cum laude) resulted in the dissertation, entitled: “Temporal multisensory processing and its effects on attention”. Currently, Erik van der Burg is working as a Post-doc at the Vrije Universiteit where he investigates multisensory interactions and attention related topics.
