Research Interests - Wind, hydrokinetic, tidal, renewable energies: * Assessment of potential resources for power harvesting through turbines from complex flows, such as atmospheric flows in presence of topography, urban canyons, rivers and waterways, industrial wastewater flows, induced wind through motorway tunnels; * Development of a novel measurement technique consisting in multiple Light Detection and Ranging (LiDARs) for 3D and volumetric scans of the atmospheric wind turbulence; * Characterization of wind turbine wakes under different atmospheric conditions for aerodynamic optimization of wind farm layout: LiDAR measurements, wind tunnel tests and LES simulations; * Instability analysis of wind turbine wakes for a more realistic prediction of turbine wake interactions within a wind farm. - Experimental Fluid Mechanics: * Design and installation of fully instrumented subsonic wind tunnels for testing high Reynolds number flows, streams with significant thermal stratifications, and reacting flows; * Deployment and development of Particle Image Velocimetry systems (2D, stereo and TOMO PIV), and Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV); * Development of techniques for time-frequency analysis of fluid dynamics signals based on Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), wavelet transform and Hilbert transform. - Aeronautical projects: * In the context of the partnership EPFL-SolarImpulse: LiDAR atmospheric measurements for flight comfort and safety; * Airborne LiDAR measurements during aircraft take-off/landing for active traffic control. - Bluff body aerodynamics: * Development of active and passive methods for reduction of the base drag of bluff bodies and road vehicles; * Characterization of the dynamics of wake vorticity structures within wakes produced by 3D bluff bodies. - Atmospheric Boundary Layer: * For the Leman-Baikal Project coordinated by the Limnology center, EPFL: multiscale investigation on atmospheric turbulence through fast-response probes installed on an Ultra Light Aircraft, wind LiDARs, and instrumented met-masts; * Characterization of the atmospheric boundary layer through LiDAR measurements over topography, urban canyons, and water/land transition.
