    About

My PhD focuses on how the actor, in becoming a character, is encumbered, and sometimes overwhelmed by his socio-cultural background and, at times, his/her religious beliefs. This dissertation seeks to analyse and reconcile the dominant and changing trends in actor-training techniques in Nigeria and how these impact on the actor’s act. Given the shifting terrain of contemporary theatre practice in Nigeria, in relation to training methods, and the concern that becoming a character embraces the creative articulation of emotions and shared experiences in the understanding of being and becoming a character, this study further explores phenomenological and ontological issues involved. By way of comparative study, I aim to identify the processes and factors that determine how the actor becomes a character while interrogating any (mis)interpretation given to a role.
