J.R. Descardeci was born in São Paulo, Brazil. He received the B.S.E.E. degree from UNESP University (Brazil) in 1984 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from UNICAMP University (Brazil), and University of London, in 1991 and 1995, respectively, with support from the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Professor Descardeci works in research for more than 18 years with several publications in the field and is currently the team leader and head of the Electrical Engineering Department at Federal University of Tocantins (UFT), Brazil. He is also a regular reviewer for several national and international conferences and journals. He acts as a consultant for private and government companies. From july/2005 to june/2006 he was on a sabbatical leave of absence at EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) in Switzerland, as a visiting professor.
