I grew up in Monona, a small suburb entirely surrounded by Madison on the southeast side of the city. I went to high school at Monona Grove High School, and after a year off working and saving money started at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. I knew from the start that I wanted to major in either psychology and philosophy, though I was not sure I wanted to continue in psychology until my senior year. In the middle of my junior year I started as a research assistant for credit in the knowledge and concepts lab, with a paid position in the summer. After graduating (a semester early) I became involved in the discussion of a research project looking into semi-supervised learning at the invitation of Professors Tim Rogers (head of the Knowledge and Concepts Laboratory that I had worked in as a research assistant), Jerry Zhu (a professor in Computer Science and expert on machine learning), and Chuck Kalish (from Education Sciences). After a few months of volunteer work on the project I took a job with Professor Rogers as a Research Support Tech, beginning the process of reorganizing the laboratory and getting researchers the tools they needed so that research could get back on track after a year of relatively slow progress. Meanwhile I started the process of applying to become the Lab Manager and reassuming research duties. That process was finally completed in November. I'm looking forward to eventually going on to graduate studies in Cognitive Psychology (assuming a get accepted), in 2011 once my position at UW ends.
