I was born in Colombia in 1980, and in 1998 I started my undergraduate studies in Marine Biology at the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University (Bogotá, Colombia). The last two years of my studies were developed in Santa Marta on the Caribbean Coast of Colombia. In 2004, I obtained a Postgraduate Diploma of the Javeriana University in Formulation and Management of Complex Environmental Projects. I also obtained a Diploma in University Teaching from the Magdalena University. In 2005 I enrolled the Master Degree Program in Marine Science and Technologies of the Las Palmas of Gran Canarias University in Spain. Then, I focused my research on the suitable management of the elasmobranches fishery in Colombia by the artisanal an indigenous communities, specially in the North of the Colombian Caribbean. With some of peers and with other researchers, I developed the Center of Investigation in Zoology and Marine Ecology (CIZEM), that is a research group linked to the Tropical Research Institue of the Magdalena University (LINK). We have been working with the Colombian goverment in the constrution of the National Plan of Marine Protected Areas (LINK), and the results of my investigations have been presented in academic congresses in Colombia and other countries (Chile, Mexico, Cuba), as well as have been published in scientific journals. At the same time, trough the CIZEM, I have been supporting the construction of the National Shark Management Plan, providing information of the sharks nursery areas in the Caribbean Coast of Colombia, as well as data of elasmobranches biodiversity, population dynamics, biological and ecological features, fishery and the influence of artisanal and indigenous communities that depend of this resource. In March 2008, I moved to Chile and started my PhD in Sciences with a specialization in Systematics and Ecology at the Universidad Austral de Chile, with a scholarship of CONICYT.
