About

Juan Paz-Viera has a degree in Physics from Universidad de Oriente (UO), Cuba in 1993, M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering, from Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas (UCLV) in 2001 and a Ph.D. in Medical Image Processing also from UCLV in 2009. From 1996 to 1999 he served at Centre for Medical Biophysics in Santiago de Cuba as MRI physicist working on image quality and applications of the Wavelet Transform to the Cuban MRI machines. From 1999 to 2012 he was employed at Centre for Studies on Electronics and Information Technologies (CEETI) at UCLV as a scientific researcher in the area of medical image processing. His research interests are related with still image processing including image quality, image de-noising, compression, segmentation, registry and image fusion. Paz-Viera has receivd scholarships for research stays at Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME) at University of New Brunswick (UNB), Canada in 2004, under a project funded by the Canadian International Development Agency, at Department of Electronics, and Information Processing (ETRO) at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in 2008 under a project funded by the Flemish VLIR-UOS Programme for Institutional University Co-operation (IUC) and at Departamento de Energia Nuclear (DEN) Universidad Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), Brasil in 2010. He is the author and co-author of around 40 scientific publications in journals and scientific conferences, is member of the American Association of Physicist in Medicine (AAPM), the Cuban Bioengineering Society, the Cuban Physics Society and the Cuban Pattern Recognition Society. He has also integrated scientific committees for Document Engineering Track of ACM-SAC, Cuban National Congress on Informatics, Electrical Engineering Symposia and Cuban Congress on Biomedical Engineering. He received the Cuban National Health Award in 2010.
