About

Dr. Karl Rinne received an electronics degree in 1992 from the University of Applied Science Regensburg (Germany), and a Ph.D. in 1997 from the University of Limerick (Ireland). He has many years of industrial experience. During his industrial career he has been working for a number of multi-national companies and SME’s in the electronics industry (Siemens AG Germany, Artesyn Technologies Ireland, Commergy Inc. Ireland). Before joining academia, Dr. Karl Rinne held the position of Principal Design Engineer at Artesyn Technologies Youghal (Ireland). He was responsible for research, product and technology development of state-of-the art switching power converters. Dr. Rinne was the key designer of Artesyn’s first generation of modular high-efficiency open-frame DC/DC converters. In July 2001, Dr. Rinne joined the Electronics and Computer Engineering Dept. at the University of Limerick (UL). From 2001 to 2006 he lectured in the areas of circuit design and computer architectures. Until 2006, Dr. Rinne was director of the mixed-signal IC design research group at UL's CSRC. He was the principal investigator and collaborator of a number of major research projects, and supervised several research students to Master and PhD level. His R&D interests include high-efficiency power conversion and integrated power management. Dr. Rinne has an extensive publication record, and presently holds several US and European patents. Dr. Rinne is co-founder of University spin-off startup company Powervation Ltd.
