I am a surfer, writer and editor from Llangrannog in West Wales. I’m in my second year of a PhD in Creative Writing at Aberystwyth University. My novel is set in a Welsh seaside village; a coming of age tale involving surfing, smuggling, myth and legend, liminality, identity and belonging in a small rural community. I think surf writing needs defining and reviving, and I want to move away from the often glamorous and extreme-sport portrayal and create and comment on a version that reflects the surfing culture in Wales — a more everyday account. I’m reading lots of Welsh writing in English (I love the later stuff like Niall Griffiths and lloyd robson, which really resonates with my experience of life in Wales) all the way through to the old Welsh texts like the Mabinogion. I’m also looking at surf literature, which there isn’t much of — part of the project is to look at why. I also have to write a critical commentary on my own work, talking about influences, themes and so on. I haven’t really started this yet as the novel comes first. I’d also love to access the wealth of writing in Welsh so I am learning the language. I have fallen in love with cynghannedd and recently joined a Welsh poetry group.
