About

My name is Kristina Cunningham, my colleagues call me Kristy. I received my B.A. from Ohio University in 2006. majoring in English and Linguistics. During that time I studied and interned abroad in Japan. I then went on to join Teach for America, teaching middle school ELA in New Haven, CT until 2008. My middle schoolers taught me more about the powers of games and experience in education than I could have imagined. This fall I start my second year in MSU's Serious Game Design M.A. Program. I will begin my M.A. project in Games for Creavity. As an SGD student I have a deep interest in the concept of Meaningful Play. I believe play is important to us as learners for three reasons: Play invites exploration. Play builds relationships. Play motivates achievement. My goals are to provide meaningful play experiences in order to enrich children and adults. I am interested in pursuing a career in the design and research of Serious Games, and intend to pursue a Ph.D. in this area. Having been a data-driven educator, I have a practice based approach to research, with the intention of designing learning environments (games as my environment of interest), then researching the practical applications and effectiveness of the environment in order to effect teaching and learning practices in the field. I welcome any suggestions for future pathways into academia.
