Leiv Rieger, PhD, P.Eng., CEO of inCTRL Solutions Inc., specializes in monitoring, control and modelling of biological wastewater treatment processes. Leiv is chairman of the IWA Task Group on "Good Modelling Practice - Guidelines for use of Activated Sludge Models", where the focus is to make modelling more practical for industries and consultants. Leiv is an elected member of the Management Committees of the IWA Specialist Groups on "Instrumentation, Control and Automation"(ICA) and "Modelling and Integrated Assessment" (MIA).

He is also a member of the Water Environment Federation (WEF) sub-committee MEGA (Modelling Expert Group of the Americas), the WEF Automation and Information Technology committee (AIT) and was the chair of the scientific committee of the 1st and 2nd IWA/WEF Wastewater Treatment Modelling Seminar (WWTmod).

Leiv is editor of Water Science and Technology, associated Editor of the Water Quality Research Journal of Canada, and a reviewer for several journals in the field of water research.

Leiv was involved in the development of new control system design tools such as sensor models, sensor classification schemes, aeration system models, and process models. His work on fault modelling and fault detection strategies allows the design of more robust control systems. Intensive instrument testing and development resulted in improved sensors and the increased use of nutrient sensors in advanced control systems. He has full-scale experience from implementing aeration control strategies at wastewater treatment plants and developed a concept for a new generation of monitoring stations. Leiv authored more than 30 publications in the field of wastewater monitoring, modelling, and control.
