Maheswarappa Balapal Sangappa

    Balapal Sangappa Maheswarappa is a son of a school teacher coming from a rural background. Had his early primary and middle school education at Halekal, a small village in Jagalur taluka, Davanagere district. Later, he had High School education at Bharamasagar and Hemmanabetur. He completed his Pre-university education at Sirigere. He is a science graduate (BSc with Chemistry, Biology and Zoology, DRM Science College, Davanagere, 1976) and a postgraduate in science (MSc in Botany, Manasaganogothri, University of Mysore, Mysore, 1978). He is an alumni of University of Mysore. He earned BLib Sc (1979) and MLib Sc (1980) from University of Mysore, Mysore. Later he obtained Ph D in Library and Information Science on the topic “A Bibliometrics Analysis of Phytopathology Literature” from Gulbarga University, Gulbarga in 1992. He has a consistent good academic record. He was the Librarian at “Ramakrishna Institute of Moral and Spiritual Education Library”, Mysore from 12th May 1980 to 10th January 1981 (for 7 ½ months). He was Lecturer at the Department of P G Studies and Research in Library and Information Science, Mansagangothri, Mysore from 11th January 1981 to 10th May 1988 (for 7 ½ years). He has also served as Reader in Information Science at the Department of P G Studies and Research in Library and Information Science, Karnatak University, Pavate Nagar, Dharwad from 11th May1988 to 7th June 1995 (for 7 ½ years). He joined as Professor of Library and Information Science at Gulbarga University on 8th June 1995. He is working as Professor of Library and Information Science and the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Gulbarga University and the member of Statutes Drafting Committee, Library Committee, of Gulbarga University, Gulbarga. He has also served as the Chairman of the Department, Chairman of BOS in Library and Information Science, Member of Academic Council of Gulbarga University, Gulbarga. He is the member of Board of Studies and Board of Appointment (BOA) in several universities in the State of Karnataka and outside the State. He has a rich administrative experience. He was responsible for design and development of curriculum for Master of Journalism and Mass Communication (MJMC) of two years duration under Semester Scheme. He served as the Coordinator for the said course for the academic year 2007-08 and 2008-09. He was also responsible as the Chairman of the Department and BOS in Library and Information Science for introduction of two years integrated MLISc program. And later Two years MLISc program under Semester Scheme. He has a rich experience of more than 29 years of teaching in Library and Information Science. He has taught courses at BLISc, MLISc and MPhil in different universities in the State namely University of Mysore, Mysore, Karnatak University, Dharwad; Gulbarga University, Gulbarga. He also has rich experience in research. He has published so far 123 research publications in National and International Journals. He has not only attended but presented several research papers in national seminars and conferences. So far, seven MPhil and Six Ph D candidates (Three from Karnatak University, Dharwad and Three from Gulbarga University, Gulbarga have obtained Ph D under his guidance) have obtained degrees under his guidance. Now, he is the Professor of Library and Information Science and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences. His areas of interest are: Informetrics; Research Methods and Statistical Techniques; Library Automation; IT Applications: Web technology; CD-ROM Technology; Soft Skills; Data Processing; Collection Management; Special Libraries.
