Martijn van Zwieten is currently pursuing a Research M.A. in Media and Performance Studies at Utrecht University. An avid gamer himself, his research focuses on the various aspects of video game culture. For his Bachelor’s thesis, completed at the University of Amsterdam for the Media & Culture program, he turned a critical eye to video game journalism, investigating the complicated relationship between industry PR messaging and video game reviews. Since then, his research has dealt with topics as diverse as video game ethics, video game literacy, video game ideology and gamification.
Outside of academia, Martijn works at Dutch video game distribution company Brizamila Entertainment B.V. as a marketing & PR manager, and has intimate knowledge of the inner workings of both the Dutch and international video game industry. Next to this, Martijn is co-editor of Bashers Academy, a popular science rubric at the collective Dutch video game blog Bashers.
