About

I am Massimo Baù, Doctoral Candidate in Business Administration at the University of Udine. I am currently attending the third year of my course (XXIII cycle). My research interests regard Family Business. The main focusses are the succession as an entrepreneurial process of entry and exit and the contractual relationship between family owners/executives and non family top executives. Discussing those topics – under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Pittino, Prof. Francesca Visintin and Prof. Cristiana Compagno – I have considered the Family Business literature, identifing the necessity of a better understanding of the non family CEO turnover ‐ performance relationship in family business, and more in general of the relationship between controlling family and non family CEOs. Moreover, I have considered the CEO turnover literature, ricognising the lack of an accurate analysis of CEO turnover in closely held firms. Usually family firms are identified with CEO controlled firms or other closely held firms and/or compared with widely held firms. I’m actually spending a period as PhD Visiting Candidate at the Center for Family Entrepreneurship and Ownership (CeFEO) at the Jönköping International Business School (JIBS) in Sweden. Under the supervision of Prof. Mattias Nordqvist and Dr. Karin Hellerstedt I’m considering succession in family firms and SMEs as a entrepreneurial process of entry and exits. During my Doctoral course I have also studied topics on Innovation management and academic entrepreneurship, in particular concerning resources and motivational factors enabling the creation of academic spin‐off or the undertake of technological transfert. Working with Prof. Cristiana Compagno and Dr. Giancarlo Lauto, we produced some articles collected in the Paper page of this website. The academic entrepreneurship is characterized by the presence of a subject beyond the traditional forms of entrepreneurship. This entity is represented by the University that pursues non‐economic goals and could be count as both shareholder and stakeholder. These considerations have brought me to consider topics of family business, where the family has a role to some extent similar to the University in academic spin‐off. The apparent complementarity of these research fields has prompted me to draw two parallel exploratory, preferring for the doctoral thesis focusing on issues of family business.
