I studied mathematics at the University of Bath as an undergraduate. Following this I studied for an MSc entitled “Data Analysis, Networks and Non-linear Dynamics” at the the University of York. I passed with a distinction. My MSc dissertation was about the dissemination of information updates through networked computer systems using epidemic protocols. This work was in collaboration with BT Exact, the research arm of BT, based in Martlesham near Ipswich. With a strong interest in networks, I returned to the University of Bath to do a PhD at the Centre For Mathematical Biology. My thesis was entitled “Mathematical Models for the spread of disease on social networks” and was submitted in June 2008. I think perhaps should have changed the title post-Facebook. I graduated as a doctor in July 2009, completing almost eleven years of living in and around Bath (save for the year away in York). Following the completion of my thesis, I went to work for the Health Protection Agency, where I have been a mathematical modeller since July 2008. My interests (work-wise) are mostly in the mathematical and computational representation of population contact structure within models for the spread and control of disease. In my spare time, I like to read, listen to music, travel and take photos. I occasionally write when I have the time, though most of my original writing now features within the articles of my blog. I am cut from the same cloth as many frustrated writers, there’s a three-quarters planned novel sitting in a box in my room somewhere that I have never quite managed to make happen.
