I have studied Dutch Language & Literature at Leiden University, and specialised in modern literature, linguistics, and philosophy of language. In 2011 I started my PhD at the Leiden University Centre for Arts in Society, while teaching undergraduate courses in literature and stylistics. My research focuses on social cognition in relation to language and literature. In my PhD project I investigate how language/narrative and cognitive processing of complicated mindreading tasks are mutually related (esp. tasks involving multiple orders of intentionality, such as: Sheila intends that Peter believes that Mary hopes that…etc.). To this effect I have developed several subprojects and collaborations. I study how ‘classic’ literary texts (ones that have been understood and appreciated for ages) represent situations involving multiple orders of intentionality. Also, I do corpus research and experiments to investigate how embedded mindstates are handled in discourse. Eventually, my project aims at integrating insights from various disciplines, including cognitive linguistics, narratology, philosophy of mind, and evolutionary psychology, in order to develop a new perspective on mindreading. My PhD supervisors at Leiden University are Professor Ineke Sluiter (Classics) and Professor Arie Verhagen (Cognitive Linguistics). For the Hilary and Trinity terms of 2014 I will be at Oxford, affiliated with the Social and Evolutionary Neuroscience Research Group (SENRG) headed by Professor Robin Dunbar. In addition, I cooperate with Anna Rotkirch (University of Helsinki), Tamás David-Barrett, and Robin Dunbar on the Fraternity Friendship Study, a longitudinal study investigating social networks and individual wellbeing within European student communities.
