Dr. Michael Granitzer has been Professor for Media Computer Science at University of Passau. Before, he was Scientific Director of the Know-Center Graz since 2010 and assistant professor at the Knowledge Management Institute of Graz University of Technology since 2008. In 2011, he was an intra-sector Marie Curie Research Fellow at Mendely Ltd. working on machine learning and information retrieval in academic knowledge bases. From 2004 to 2010 he managed the division of Knowledge Relationship Discovery within the Know-Center. From 2001 to 2004 he was project manager in projects at the Know-Center covering topics like automatic text classification, text retrieval in millions of documents and visualisation of several million documents. Before this, he was involved in several database projects at JOANNEUM RESEARCH Austria. Michael Granitzer studied Telematik at Graz University of Technology with special focus on Computational Intelligence and holds a PhD degree, passed with distinction, in technical science. Research Topics: His research addresses topics in the field of Information Retrieval, Machine Learning, Visual Analytics, Knowledge Discovery, Semantic Technologies and Multimedia Semantics. Along this line of research he worked on content based quality analysis, text mining, semantic enrichment, text reuse in media, Folksonomy analysis, visually supported ontology alignment methods as well as on the retrieval and visual exploration of large unstructured media repositories. He published around 120 mostly peer-reviewed publications including journal publications, book chapters and books in the above mentioned fields. Management: As scientific director of the Know-Center Graz - an application oriented research center funded by Austria’s COMET program - Michael Granitzer has been responsible for around 40 researchers and for managing a research budget of around 3.5 million € p.a. As division manager and senior researcher he managed around 20 industry research projects within the COMET program and has been responsible for a budget of 1.1 million € p.a. Besides his activities in the Know-Center, he has been involved in several nationally and internationally funded research projects. In particular, he led work packages in the nationally funded FIT-IT Project MISTRAL (Measurable, Intelligent and reliable Semantic exTraction and RetrievAL of multimedia data) , managed the 4 times awarded FIT-IT project DYONIPOS (DYnamic ONtology based Integrated Process OptimiSation) and was scientific coordinator of the Marie Curie FP 7 IAPP Project TEAM (Transferring knowledgE in Academic knowledge, 1 Million €) , the Marie Curie FP 7 IRSES project WIQ-EI (Web Information Quality Evaluation Initiative, 400k €). Currently, he is scientific coordinator (principle investigator) of the FP 7 STREP CODE – Commercially empowered Linked Open Data Ecosystems in Research and the FP 7 IP EEXCESS - Enhancing Europe’s eXchange in Cultural Educational and Scientific Resources. Community Activities: Michael Granitzer (co-)chaired several workshops in the domains of Knowledge Management, Multimedia Semantics, Information Retrieval and Knowledge Discovery and was program chair in well renowned conferences like the I-Know – International Conference on Knowledge Technologies and Knowledge Management - or the SAMT - International Conference on Semantic and Digital Media Technologies. He is member in several communities like the Multimedia Metadata Community or working group member in the COST Action 804 on Decision Support System in Forestry. Further, he was member in several program committees and reviewer for well known journals like Elsevier’s Pattern Recognition, Springer’s Journal on Multimedia Tools and Applications and the IEEE Journal on Transactions of Knowledge and Data Engineering. Through his application oriented research projects he has a broad network in media, software and engineering industry. Lecturing: Michael Granitzer has been conducting academic lectures and lectures in industry qualification programs on a regular basis. He conducts lectures at Graz University of Technology, like for example the annual lecture on Semantic Technologies or “Writing of Scientific Thesis”. He has been supervisor of numerous master and bachelor thesis and co-advisor in several PhD thesis.
