Michele Fornaro, MD, PhD (born in Pisa, Italy, on Oct 9th, 1977) graduated in 2002 from the University of Genova, Genoa, Italy, and completed his residency program in 2008. In 2007-2008 MF completed a one-year "research fellowship" program at the Depression and Clinical Research Program (DCRP) at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) - Harvard University -, Boston, MA, USA, under the supervision of Dr. M. Fava. Then, MF joined the bipolar clinical and research group headed by Dr. G. Perugi at the Santa Chiara Hospital, University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy (2008-2011), while still completing his Doctorate in Applied Neuroscience from the University of Genova (May, 2008- March, 2011). On September 2011, MF was assigned the title of "Assistant Professor" at the University of Catania, Catania, Italy, serving as a teaching faculty member (four-year appointment). MF was also awarded first prize at the annual poster-presentation event on "clinical psychopharmacology of mood and anxiety disorders" endorsed by the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP), held in Cascais, Portugal, on October 2011. On December 2011, MF began his "visiting scholarship" program at the Veterans Hospital (VA) at the University of California San Diego (USCD), La Jolla, San Diego, CA, USA, under the supervision of Dr. J. Kelsoe. There, he was introduced to the genetics of bipolar disorders, circadian rhythms and lithium therapeutic response, while still attending to his primary clinical and research interests focusing on the epidemiology of Bipolar Disorders, mixed features and affective temperaments, as well as on clinical psychopharmacology of Mood and Anxiety Disorders' broad Spectra. After attending the 2014 Summer Session for Public Health Studies of the Harvard University, MF was appointed Adjunct Associate Research Scientist at Columbia University on November 2014 (ongoing appointment) under the supervision of Dr. M Oquendo (President elect of the American Psychiatric Association - APA). MF is also member of the Italian Society of Neuropsychopharmacology (SINPF) since 2008 and, since 2012, of the European Psychiatric Association (EPA - official Journal: European Psychiatry), fellow of the International Society for Affective Disorders (ISAD - official Journal: Journal of Affective Disorders) and member of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP - official Journal: European Neuropsychopharmacology). MF is a member of the Italian Society of Psychopathology (SOPSI - official Journal, "Giornale Italiano di Psicopatologia") and of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD - official Journal: Bipolar Disorders) since 2013. In 2014, MF joined the Editorial Board of the following Journals: "Research and Advances in Psychiatry" (http://www.rapjournal.eu/) and "Medicine" (http://journals.lww.com/md-journal/pages/default.aspx - IF=5.723 - Ranking: Medicine, General & Internal 15/153).
