About

Miller Alonso has over 16 years' graduate experience as a researcher and an academic in water, wastewater and pathogen control engineering, both in developing countries and in the UK. His professional and academic experience is mainly linked to disinfection by-products control in drinking water, natural wastewater treatment systems and airborne pathogen transport and control in indoor environments. His early career as an academic in the National University of Colombia enabled him to develop a deep knowledge in water and wastewater engineering by undertaking both research and teaching activities (at BEng and MSc levels), and working as an environmental engineering consultant in multi-disciplinary projects and contracts to the goverment and private sector in Colombia. In the UK, Miller Alonso's research work has been dedicated to study nutrient transformation pathways and removal mechanisms in natural wastewater treatment systems; particularly, nitrogen algal uptake and nitrification-denitrification in waste stablization ponds and the possibility to develop alga-based technologies to retrofit existing assets in the UK water industry to tackle CO2 emissions, nutrient control and renewable energy generation. Miller Alonso has been recently appointed as Director of Postgraduate Research Studies (PGR Tutor) in Civil Engineering and his teaching activities are mainly link to our graduate programmes MSc in Water, Sanitation and Health Engineering and MSc in Environmental Engineering and Project Management.
