About

My current research involves investigating the nature of the lithosphere—asthenosphere transition (LAT) through the study of S-to-P converted waves. Novel aspects of my approach include (1) a focus on elucidating the frequency dependence of converted phases in order to estimate the transition thickness of the LAT, and (2) using spectral-element methods to understand frequency-dependent wavefield interactions with complex 2-D structure. Constraints on the transition thickness provide useful information about the nature of the boundary between the rigid plate and the more-pliable region below: a thin transition thickness with a sharp velocity drop may imply ponding of partial melt beneath the solidus, whereas a thick transition corresponds to gradual changes of the geotherm.
