Urban Emotions | The spatial and social structures of a city, e.g. buildings, traffic infrastructure, parks, just as the dynamics of human activities and underlying processes, can trigger various collective and individual human sensations. The consideration of emotions in civic-centered spatial planning processes is a major challenge in shaping the fundamentally changing planning understanding in a network society. The goal of the Urban Emotion project is to analyse the developmental tendencies of real-time human-resource-systems and crowdsourcing approaches in social networks. This contextual emotion information data could be used for decision-making in spatial planning and to further develop it as a new methodology for urban and spatial planning. This methodology includes, among other things, the correlation between emotions extracted from psycho-physiological smart-band sensory measurements, and various VGI data stocks (Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, etc.). Here, the topics of data protection and handling of personal data are discussed. The research results of Urban Emotions will give new and additional insights into the complex human-sensor-city (space) effect. These insights are provided by novel techniques for the visualisation of the analysed data and their preparation for planning processes to validate existing planning measures. This is demonstrated by the cities of Heidelberg, Kaiserslautern and Boston (USA). Planning practitioners receive a corresponding method overview which can be used as an additional recommendation for action.
