I research self-regulated learning, metacognition, study tactics, and software tools for researching how students learn and that can support them to learn more effectively. To pursue this work, colleagues and I developed a browser extension, called nStudy. nStudy has a double role. First, students can use nStudy's features to study – highlight and tag text and video online, take notes, build concept maps, write essays and more. Second, as students work, nStudy seamlessly adds to our custom database highly detailed, time-stamped trace data about how a student studies and the content on which a student operates while studying. We are extending nStudy to compute and report learning analytics to students, instructors and researchers.
