Raúl Muñoz obtained his degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Valladolid (UVa, Spain) in 2001 and carried out his final year project at the Dept. of Biotechnology of Lund University (Sweden), where he was awarded with the SYSAV First Prize for the Best Master Thesis Work 2001 in Sweden. Raúl Muñoz completed his Doctoral Thesis “Algal-bacterial photobioreactors for the degradation of toxic organic pollutants” at the Dept. of Biotechnology of Lund University under the supervision of Prof. Bo Mattiasson and Dr. Benoit Guieysse in June 2005. During his PhD studies, Raúl evaluated the potential and mechanisms underlying the biodegradation of toxic organic pollutants in symbiotic-algal bacterial microcosms, a pioneering research in the field of applied phycology that extended the application of this technology to industrial wastewaters. Raúl Muñoz successfully competed in the Spanish National Program “Juan de la Cierva” at the age of 26 and was ranked in the 2nd position in the area of Chemical Technology. He joined the Dept. of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Technology at UVa in Nov 2005, with a research focused on biological off-gas treatment of Volatile Organic Compounds. In February 2007, at the age of 28, Raúl Muñoz successfully competed in the Spanish National Program “Ramón y Cajal” and was ranked 6th (the average age of this program is 38). In July 2007, the applicant carried out a 3 months research stay at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). The applicant started his 5 years senior researcher contract Ramon y Cajal in January 2008 at UVa, which represented the consolidation in the Dept. of the biological gas treatment and microalgae-based wastewater treatment research lines. In 2009, he carried out a 3 months research stay at UNSW (Australia) at the laboratory of Prof. Richard Stuetz, and a 1 month research stay at Universidad Mayor de San Simon (Bolivia). In 2013, Raúl Muñoz also conducted a 6 months research stay at the Laboratories of Dr. Sergio Revah (UAM-Cuajimalpa, México), and in 2014 a 3 months research stay at Universidad de la Frontera (Chile). Today, Raúl Muñoz is Associate professor at the Dept. of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Technology of Valladolid University. Over the past 10 years, 15 international and 3 national collaborations with leading groups in the fields of biological gas treatment and microalgae-based wastewater treatment were initiated. The applicant has 116 works published in JCR scientific journals, 67 % of them within the Q1 of the JCR classification, and has co-authored 7 International Book Chapters (+ 10 National Book Chapters). His works have been cited 2350 times, with an H index of 28 (Scopus ID: 16319160700). He has supervised 10 PhD Thesis (+ 6 on-going), 16 Master Thesis, 20 Research Works and 10 Final Year Projects. Finally, he has been Principal Investigator in 18 R&D projects.
