I am an associate professor at Brigham Young University in the Instructional Psychology and Technology department. My main research interests are in (1) evaluating and designing instructional environments that foster collaborative creativity and (2) online learning communities. I have also published widely on K-16 technology integration and the technological training of preservice teachers. My publications are available at, and my CV is at Here are a few additional projects I have been involved in: - I developed a framework, called Communities of Innovation, to describe those communities that foster innovation, rather than practice. This framework was described in a 2009 paper in ETR&D that won the 2010 AECT Outstanding Journal Article Award. - In collaboration with Brad Marianno, we have developed and validated an instrument for assessing dynamic expertise, a critical skill for group creativity. A paper sharing the instrument and validation data is under review. - In collaboration with Peter Rich, I developed a framework for evaluating the quality of educational scholarship (Rigor, Impact, and Prestige). I use these frameworks to inform much of my work. This framework is described in a 2012 paper in Innovative Higher Education and a 2012 paper in Educational Technology. - I am a co-developer, with Dan Randall and Buck Harrison, of the IPT Ed TEC open badges and Instructional Technology for Teachers MOOC.
