About

Dr Richard Pollok is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George's Hospital and Medical School (St George's University of London-SGUL). He also see patients at Parkside Hospital and the New Malden Diagnostic Centre. He is fully registered with the GMC and have specialist certification in Gastroenterology and General internal Medicine. Dr Richard Pollok trained at St Bartholomew's Hospital and won a highly sought after Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellowship gaining his PhD in the field of the gut immunity and GI infection. He was awarded The Digestive Disease Foundation (CORE) National Research Prize for this work. His current research programme focuses on the causes and improving the diagnosis of conditions like inflammatory bowel disease:- -His research group have studied at 'protein signatures' in the serum of patients with IBD with a view to developing novel non-invasive diagnostic tests in the future. -His group are evaluating new imaging techniques to improve diagnosis in IBD and reduce patients exposure to diagnostic medical radiation. -Presently his group are analysing a national data sets of patients with IBD to look at trends in the natural history of IBD and the impact of medical therapy on disease progression and their role in preventing the need for surgery. His clinical interests include inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis,gastrointestinal infection, indigestion and heartburn, chronic diarrhoea, lymphoedema, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and family screening for bowel cancer. He is an experienced therapeutic endoscopist and has performed many thousand gastroscopies and colonoscopies.
