Rogerio Margis was born in Santo Angelo, Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil. He made all his fundamental studies at São Pedro College, a Marist Institution. Biologist graduated at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, obtained the Master Degree in Science (M.Sc.) under supervision of Dr. Radovan Borojevic, at the Biochemistry Department, Chemistry Institut, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, with a dissertation about "Effect of retinoids in cellular differantiation from miofibroblasts to adipocytes". The Ph.D. in Plant Virology and Molecular Biology was made with Dr. Lothaire Pinck at the Institute de Biologie Moleculaire des Plantes, IBMP-CNRS, Univeristé Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg, France. The thesis focused in the Grapevine Fanleaf Virus - GFLV viral polyprotein processing by its cysteine proteinsase. In 2002, with a CNPq Post-doctoral fellowship, worked in the discovering and dissection of Dicer-like proteins in RNA interfering mechanisms in plants, togetjer to Jean Finnegan and Peter Waterhouse at the Plant Industry, CSIRO The professional activities included: (i) the Federal Technical School of Chemitry in Rio de Janeiro from 1986 until 1994; (ii) associate professor at the Biochemistry Department of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1994 to 2004) and Biochemistry and Biophysics Departments of Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (2004 to the present); (iii) research leader at the Center of Biotechnology - UFRGS. The activities also included the oppening of a private company named VITATEC LTDA in 2008. This company ( provides solutions and services in New Generation Sequencinf and gene expression and polymorphism analyses based in real-time PCR.
