About

I was born and grew up in the South Carolina upcountry. My family has been long-time residents of the community dating back to an ancestor who was a horse-soldier in the American War of Independence. Mostly, my fore-bearers were Scot-Irish or English settlers. Curiosity and learning runs strong in my family. My ancestors were readers and learners. They were small farmers living off the bounty of the land who valued goodness, knowledge, liberty, and independence. Today, I live on inherited land that I am restoring to an organic farm. My self-concept is one of a gentleman farmer with broad and varied academic and literary interests. I have an insatiable curiosity and desire to learn. As a child, I read voraciously, conducted science experiments, and explored the natural world around me. Everything interests me. I like new ideas, creative expressions, and innovative solutions. I like people very much and enjoy conversing with them. Creative intelligent people intrigue and inspire me.
