Entered bioscience out of a fascination with genetics and evolution fostered by reading Dawkins and helped by a hobby of programming (when that was a rare talent). Chose to pursue neuroscience by accident and circumstance; then moved across to arabidopsis by another accident of circumstance; and ended up as Director of NASC by (you guessed it). Each time I had unusual skill combinations (that are frankly not so unusual any more :). My abnormal path resulted in a leap from postdoc directly to professor (after trying very hard to go a sensible path for several years but being barred by guessed it again). So - a career characterised by having an unusual combination of rare talents/abilities and being in the right place at the right (or wrong) time. Eventually I ended up publishing in evolutionary genetics - so I sorta got where I thought I was going...
