About

I am currently a PhD student at the Centro de Oceanografia. I graduated in the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, with an MSc in Marine Ecology and Environmental Management in 2008. My research area focuses in marine ecology, more specifically in the assessment of environmental quality of marine habitats based on their fish assemblages, which is the subject of my PhD project. Although many fish-based tools were developed and tested to assess freshwater and transitional waters, a considerable knowledge gap concerning marine ecosystems exists, which urges the study of their communities in order not only to protect marine habitats from human pressure, but also to respond to European Directives such as the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Through the study of fish response in the presence of anthropogenic impacts, I hope to improve a multimetric index that may be useful for evaluating the quality status of marine habitats, allowing the classification of areas with ecological interest. This last point is related with the key of my scientific interest which is the protection of the marine environment.
