My research is currently focused on understanding how microbial cells interact with their environment both as a community and as individual cells. I use microfluidics-microscopy and develop bespoke microfluidic devices that enable to accurately control the microenvironment surrounding the cells and perform a series of functional assays on the very same individual cells. This allows me to shed light on the physiology of rare subpopulations of cells that are generally hidden in ensemble measurements on clonal populations. In this respect I am particularly interested in antibiotic tolerant cells such as bacterial persisters and viable but not culturable cells that are able to survive the antibiotic challenge posing a serious threat to human health. I am currently using microfluidic-microscopy, colony forming unit assays, flow cytometry, real-time PCR and RNA sequencing to unravel the effect of the nutritional status on the formation of antibiotic tolerant cells in the model organism Escherichia coli.
