About

I am Professor of Microbiology at Nottingham Trent University and member of UK FSA Advisory Committee on Animal Foodstuffs. Previously I have been an advisor to FAO-WHO on the microbiological safety of powdered infant formula; three risk assessments 2004, 2006, & 2008. I was also on the European Food Safety Authority for several years (Brussels and Parma). My main activities are as a lecturer covering a number of microbiology topics at Nottingham Trent University. I lecture on topics ranging from the origin of life, astrobiology, food microbiology (especially food-borne pathogens, and HACCP), forensic microbiology as well as microbial physiology and bioinformatics. Our research spans the detection, characterisation and virulence of important foodborne pathogens. Please see http://www.foodmicrobe.com/publications.htm for our publications. Our 'Pathogen Research Group' studies Campylobacter jejuni and coli, Cronobacter species, and Yersinia enterocolitica, as well as other emergent bacterial pathogens; Enterobacter hormaechei and Citrobacter koseri. We have well supported research facilities to investigate bacterial pathogens, ranging from conventional microbiology (detection methods), phenotyping and genotyping, through to proteomics, microarray analysis and genome analysis.
