Steven have been conducting interdisciplinary research in the areas of Acoustic and Optical Meta-materials, specifically, exploring the behavior of wave propagation in artificially engineered periodic structures, and developing functional micro/nano systems to benefit applications such as communications, bio-sensing, and medical diagnosis and therapy. He has published close to 30 peer-reviewed journal papers with near 500 total citations. His research findings have been featured as cover images in Advanced Materials, Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, Applied Physics Letters, and Lab on a Chip (4 times), and reported by The National Science Foundation and more than 200 public media such as US News and World Report. In 2011, Steven was selected to receive the Rustum and Della Roy Innovation in Materials Research Award, Penn State University (most prestigious award designed to honor interdisciplinary materials research). In 2010-2011, he received the Theodore Holden Thomas, Jr. Memorial Scholarship for his academic excellency. In 2010, he won the student paper competition award in the physical acoustic category at the IEEE International Ultrasonic Symposium.
