Tobias Plieninger is Professor of Social-Ecological Interactions in Agricultural Systems at the Universities of Göttingen and Kassel in Germany. He was previously Associate Professor with the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He holds a degree in forestry and a PhD in forest and environmental sciences from the University of Göttingen and the University of Freiburg. He is interested in the study of the driving forces, processes, and patterns of changes in human-shaped landscapes. His research integrates natural and social science approaches to landscape management, ecology, and conservation, including conservation biology, vegetation ecology, and regional development. Key topics are ecosystem services, cultural landscape, and social-ecological resilience. He has been coordinator of the EU FP7 project HERCULES (Sustainable futures for Europe’s heritage in cultural landscapes) and workpackage leader in the EU H2020 project SINCERE (Spurring innovations for forest ecosystem services in Europe) and the EU FP7 project AGFORWARD (Agroforestry that will forward rural development).
