About

Mr. Smith completed a BA in political science in 1991 at Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN, a JD in 1994 at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and a Master's of Public Affairs program in 2009 at the LBJ School. Before returning to academia in 2007, Mr. Smith worked as an attorney in Nashville, Tennessee, built scenery for theater and television in New York and L.A., and volunteered with the international medical humanitarian aid organization Médicins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders in China and Ethiopia. While at LBJ, Mr. Smith has served as a teaching assistant for Quantitative Analysis for Global Policy Studies and Advanced Empirical Methods. In 2008, he worked with Impumelelo Innovations Award Trust in Cape Town, South Africa where he authored the tenth volume in Impumelelo’s Series of Best Practice--a book of case studies of award-winning environmental programs. While pursuing his PhD, Mr. Smith is working with Climate Change and African Political Stability (CCAPS) project at the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law, where he is currently helping to map climate change vulnerability in Africa and to track climate change adaptation aid to African nations. Mr. Smith's primary policy interests are poverty reduction, sustainable development, sustainable use of natural resources, food security, and climate change adaptation in sub-Saharan Africa. He is interested in both quantitative and qualitative research methods. He has completed several classes in various statistical methods at UT and has recently honed his interview skills during extensive CCAPS field research in southern Africa. When not studying or working Todd can be found availing himself of Austin’s many mountain biking opportunities, or running trails, attending some of Austin's many live music offerings, or just hanging with his Jack Russell Terrier, Eston.
