Born and raised in Rostock, Germany. University education at Universität Rostock (Oct 1996 - Jul 1999, Oct 2000 - Jan 2002), University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (Aug 1999 - May 2000, now University of KwaZulu-Natal), and Cornell University and American Museum of Natural History (Aug 2002 - Aug 2007). Summer internship at National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC (May 2000 - Aug 2000) and visiting researcher at COBICE, Zoological Museum of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark (Aug 2001, Feb-Mar 2002).
