compositional data analysis

It is well known since 1897 that classical statistics are not suitable to analyse compositional data, i.e., data which represent parts of a whole, like percentages, ppm, molar composition, and the like. I started my research career in this fascinating field back in 1982, when working on my PhD thesis, which I presented in 1986. In 2001, J.J. Egozcue and myself published a paper in which we show that compositional data can be endowed with a Euclidean type geometry, which we called "Aitchison geometry", to honor John Aitchison for his contributions in this field. It opens up the possibility to apply all usual methods to compositional data.
