Dr. Vidhya Balasubramanian is an Associate Professor in the Dept of Computer Science and Engineering, Amrita University. She has experience in large scale spatial temporal data management and multimedia information retrieval. As a member of the Distributed Systems Middleware group in University of California, Irvine, she worked on user-based multimedia content adaptation for distance learning. She has worked on building large simulation platforms for disaster response in the ITR-Rescue project, part of California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2). She worked on scalable multi-geography path planning algorithms in the context of designing integrated disaster response simulation test beds. Her current areas of interests are spatial and temporal data management, and multimedia indexing and searching. Her experience working on large systems has given her rich experience in large scale data management and scalable algorithm. She is currently working on a DST funded project on Indoor GIS. The goal of this project is to create a hierarchical extendible data model for indoor information which can represent buildings, entities within it, utilities, objects inside the building, and sensors inside the building for object tracking and localization, so that the represented data is easily stored and queried using a spatio-temporal database. An indoor information system will be developed which can support indoor asset tracking and real-time navigation over this data model. Vidhya did her B.E in Computer Science and Engineering from Government College of Engineering, Tirunelveli. She did her MS in Computer Science and consequently received PhD in 2008 from the Dept of Computer Science, University of California, Irvine. She has about 12 International Publications in the areas of multimedia information retrieval and large scale data management.
