Prof. CHIEN has been a professor in mental health nursing at School of Nursing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University since 2011 and was appointed as an Associate Head (2015-17) in the School. He has appointed as Associate Dean, Faculty of Health and Social Sciences at The University. As an advanced practice nurse and active researcher, Prof. CHIEN has strived to improve mental health in her native Hong Kong SAR, China by establishing psycho-education and mutual support group programs to community-resided people with mental health problems and their family members through psychosocial interventions, research, advocacy, and community mental health promotion in the past 20 years. Prof. CHIEN have been an active academia and researcher and led the Mental Health Research Groups in faculties of health sciences and nursing for the past 20 years and have recently provided consultancy and staff training in non-government mental health care agencies in Hong Kong, mainland China and South East Asia. He has contributed to the development of education curriculum, licensure and practice guidelines of psychiatric/mental health nursing and reviews of research proposals and publications in the international and national Nursing Boards or funding bodies, and served as editors and editorial board members of international refereed nursing and health care journals. He has obtained over 30 health research grants with an amount of about HKD 20,000,000 (>US$2,500,000) and published over 135 articles in peer-reviewed international nursing, psychiatric or health care journals and substantial number of conference papers and book chapters.
