Political Communication Text Analysis Automatic Content Analysis

About

I study political communication, especially the antecedents and consequences of mass media coverage of political discourse. My research has a strong methodological focus on using AI / Computational NLP techniques to improve automatic text (content) analysis. In november 2008 I defended my dissertation on Semantic Network Analysis, where I show (a) how Syntax Parsing and Sentiment Analysis can be used to automatically extract the Semantic Network representing political statements from newspaper articles, and (b) how Semantic Network techniques can be used to query the resulting graph. You can also buy the book from amazon. From 2008 I worked as a post-doc on "Short term media logic and the long term viability of democracy", funded as part of the NWO 's Contested Democracy project. From january 2012 I will work on a NWO Veni grant on Mediatized politics. See http://vanatteveldt.com for more information
