The subject is reviewed with reference to the ancestry of modern rice varieties and varietal characteristics affecting yield stability. Among these latter are agronomic characters such as photoperiodism, growth period duration, height and tillering, as well as pest resistance and tolerance of drought, flooding, adverse soils and adverse temperatures. The need for greater diversity in modern varieties with stability traits derived from numerous sources is stressed.
