Abstract

Current design procedure for shear of reinforced concrete members such as columns and beams is based on the fundamental concept that the total shear force is partly resisted by concrete and remaining shear is to be allocated to web reinforcement. From this point of view, it is necessary to verify the interactions between the shear resisting actions provided by concrete and web reinforcement. In this study the authors proposed new shear test method for verifying each shear resisting mechanisms by using the external shear reinforcement with high yield strength bars. Monotonic shear tests were carried out on four column specimens and the results were discussed in terms of the role of web reinforcement in shear mechanisms and the shear resisting behavior of concrete.
