Abstract

Perspectives from 165 different augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) users were summarized following a content analysis of 187 first- and third-person articles, published between the years 1982 and 1987. Data sources (425 pages) were analyzed for emerging themes regarding AAC users’ perspectives on augmentative and alternative communication and other issues. Analysis of the data sources resulted in the following typologies: frustration, attitudes toward professionals, communication partners, aided techniques, and communication and speech. Demographic data describing the 165 users are provided. Implications for future qualitative research studies are discussed. © 1990, Informa UK Ltd. All rights reserved.
