A group of preschool children admitted to the hospital with accidental injury during a twelve month period was studied intensively in home and hospital by a multidiscipline team. Methods were developed to classify injuries on the basis of etiology rather than description, and to analyze the association of child, family, and environmental factors with each injury. A variety of such associations was discovered, emphasizing the critical role of the relationship between the child and his human and physical environment in the accident syndrome.
