An alternative method was presented for measuring the nonlinearity parameters β of longitudinal acoustic waves propagating in solids. The method was based on the detection of the phase modulation resulting from the parametric interaction between a lower frequency acoustic pulse and a high frequency acoustic waves. It was found that the measurement was absolute and the sign of the parameter β could be determined.
