The surfactant self-diffusion coefficients and 14N NMR relaxation parameters are reported for the micellar and cubic phases formed in the cetylpyridinum chloride/sodium salicylate/water system where the molar ratio of cetylpyridinum chloride to sodium salicylate is always equal to 1. Both the relaxation rates and the self-diffusion vary smoothly with the surfactant concentration, and in particular there is no discontinuity at the phase boundary between the micellar and cubic phases. It is argued that this fact supports the notion that the microstructure in the micellar region is bicontinuous and resembles the structure in the cubic phase, albeit with no long-range order. © 1993, American Chemical Society.
